Description

Delicious and chewy applesauce oatmeal cookies that are easy to bake and perfect for enjoy fresh.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup (113g) butter, melted and cooled
  • 1/2 cup (100g) brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup (67g) white sugar
  • 1 egg, room temperature
  • 1 tbsp (15ml) vanilla
  • 3/4 cup (190g) unsweetened applesauce
  • 2 cups (240g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup (90g) rolled oats
  • 3/4 tsp (3g) baking soda
  • 1 tsp (2g) cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp (2g) baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp (3g) salt

Instructions

  1. Scoop & Shape Dough: Start by scooping the dough into tablespoon-sized portions. You will want to roll each scoop into a ball to help them bake evenly. The dough should feel slightly sticky but hold its shape well. Avoid making them too large; otherwise, they might not cook through properly.
  2. Place on Baking Sheet: Set the rolled balls on a greased baking sheet, making sure to leave some space between them. They will flatten out a bit as they bake. If you crowd them, they are likely to stick together during baking, which is not ideal.
  3. Bake & Check for Doneness: Pop the cookies in the oven and bake them for around 15 minutes. You will know they are done when the edges are set but the centers remain soft and slightly undercooked. Resist the urge to overbake; they will firm up while cooling!
  4. Cool on Rack: Transfer the cookies to a wire rack and let them cool completely. This step helps keep the texture chewy and pleasant. If you leave them on the hot baking sheet too long, they might overcook and become harder than you would like.
  5. Enjoy Them Fresh: Dig in while they are still a bit warm for the best taste! The aroma is so inviting, and the soft texture is just right. If you wait too long, they may lose that soft chewiness, so do not wait too long to enjoy these yummy cookies!

Notes

  • Storage Tips: Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days or in the fridge for a week. You can also freeze the cookies and thaw in the microwave when wanted.
  • Expert Tips: Use good quality vanilla for best flavor. Do not overmix the dough to ensure chewy cookies.
  • Reheating Instructions: To reheat, use a microwave and heat for about 10-15 seconds until warm.
  • Serving Suggestions: Pair with a glass of milk. Serve warm with a scoop of ice cream. Include in a packaged lunch for kids.
  • Recipe Variations: Substitute unsweetened applesauce with 1 cup mashed bananas to make Banana Oatmeal Cookies. Add chocolate chips for a sweeter treat. Incorporate nuts for added crunch. Mix in dried fruits such as raisins or cranberries.
  • Ingredient Notes: Select good quality unsweetened applesauce for the best moisture in your cookies. For a gluten-free option, substitute all-purpose flour with a gluten-free flour blend. To make these cookies vegan, replace the egg with a flaxseed egg or applesauce and use vegan butter.
  • If cookies spread too much while baking, cooling the butter properly can help. Chilling the dough for about 30 minutes can also work wonders.
  • When cookies turn out dry or crumbly, it is best to avoid overmixing the dough. Also, make sure you are using the correct amount of applesauce.
  • If the edges are browning too quickly while the center remains soft, lowering the oven temperature slightly and extending the baking time can help.
  • For a chewy texture that everyone enjoys, keep mixing to a minimum when preparing the dough.
